Growing up in Long Island, New York, my cultural palate never experienced many cuisines such as Italian, Chinese, American, and Moms. Turkish food was never an option, so now, at 38 years of vintage, I can appreciate the first-class candy, peppery, and heat flavors this cuisine, wealthy in culture, provides.
Sauce thieves
When the risk of sauce theft is so common that an area has to hang up a signal announcing, “Sausflesjes mogen niet naar buiten” (“Sauce bottles are not allowed out of doors”), something unique needs to be taking place inside! Leeman Döner has been its family-owned and operated commercial enterprise since 1992, with two locations here in Amsterdam. Except for one month in line with the year, the tough operating Kilic family cranks 200kg or 400lbs of döner PER DAY!
What is döner?
It’s an inverted cone of meat seasoned with Turkish spices and slowly cooked vertically on a rotisserie to make any Fat Kid weak on the knees.
Spinning around and round
I walk in; I’m practically drooling! Serving up Turkish Pizza, Lamb or Chicken Döner, Dürüm, Kebab, Falafel, Börek or even Baklava, you can choose pretty much anything on the menu and only pay a few euros for it! I provided my order, “Kip broodje,” and thankfully located an area to sit. Entranced, I watch the four meat saunas work their magic!
Spinning spherical and round, the döner slowly cooks while clean, made-to-order pieces of bread are coated up, waiting to be known into action. “Hondered drieentwintig!” They call out. “Hondered drieentwintig,” They yell out once more….” Then, “Number 123!” “Shit!” I assume that’s me. “Sorry. Dank Je well,” I say as I seize my hen package deal of pleasure like a newborn.
Battle equipment
The equipment I need for battle, napkins, and further garlic sauce are within placing distance as I eye up my first chew. I dive in! The crunch of the lettuce, chunk from the onion, and earthiness of the cilantro mixed with the flavor of paprika, salt, black pepper, garlic, cumin, oregano, and purple pepper contact my palate, developing holy matrimony of flavors with the fowl. Physically unable to put my sandwich down, I giggle, watching the lunchtime video game unfolding before me. Everyone there may be “Pac-Man” ingesting: chomp, chomp, chomp without prevention. My very own Fat Kids model of “Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat” starts playing in my head as I douse my sandwich with greater garlic sauce!
Brothers-in-palms
Like machines, without announcing a word, we’re garlic sauce “Brothers-in-palms,” passing the bottle from side to side to each different after each chunk until there may be no greater sandwich left! Out of breath, I cave as I contemplate another sandwich. “Why not?” I say as I re-enlist my belly for every other excursion of obligation. It’s simply that precise. Remember, irrespective of where you come from, where you’re at, or where you’re going, meals let us come collectively, notwithstanding cultural or religious differences. Stop in today and say hi to my pals at Leeman Döner!”
